Star World to focus on American TV shows

Kolkata, Mar 2 (PTI) Despite the success of the celebrity talk show ''Koffee with Karan'', English entertainment channel Star World today said they would continue to focus on American TV shows.

"American television shows is looked upon as being aspirational in nature. Our focus has always been on presenting global content for a niche and affluent English-speaking audience. That has been the channel''s DNA and we are not going to shift from that," Saurabh Yagnik, general manager (English channels) of Star India told PTI here.

Noted for its fresh and witty appeal, ''Koffee with Karan'' has producer-director Karan Johar eliciting the sauciest secrets from the biggest names of Bollywood.

Karan''s highly polished communication skills and intimate mannerism managed to make the show, currently in its third season, unique ever since it was aired first in 2004.

"We will have Indian shows, but the channel will be driven predominantly by international content. Our strategy is to have iconic shows from the US and some locally-produced shows like the Karan Johar show," the channel official said.

This month, Star World will launch five new shows in different genres - comedy, crime and drama.

Branding the initiative as ''Fully-loaded March line-up'', the shows include ''Dexter'', ''Mr Sunshine'', ''Raising Hope'', ''Las Vegas'' and ''Community''.

"There is a huge headroom for growth in the English programming category as India''s 30 per cent population converses in English," Yagnik said while talking about the Rs 500 crore non-news English entertainment channel market in the country.

"With the growth of English-speaking people in the country, this segment will grow two to three times in the near future," he said.
